Birthday Messages
2003

@I held an online event asking my site visitors to write short birthday messages to Dan to send it together as a group during May 7th - June 18th. To thank my visitors for their support for the site, I volunteered to translate Japanese messages as a former EFL teacher, with a length limitation (4 lines on the event forum) . Though it isn't very long, 61 Dan fans (all Japanese speakers) joined me and I believe we sent him a nice poster. Thanks very much to all the participants and I hope you can join again for another opportunity. (names are listed below)

<Oct 2>Oh MY!!! Dan sent me another thank you letter, to our thank you card and my personal b-day gifts. He's SO amazing!! I'd like to thank everybody who contributed to that hand-made card (or in Dan's word, booklet)! Dan's second letter can be read here and the picture is here. For more detail of the card we sent, click here. Thank you Daniel, from bottom of my heart. If you've missed the opportunity, you can join next time. I'm looking forward to welcome new people.

<Aug 18> OK, now you can see the whole image of Dan's letter on 'Autographs' corner in the Gallery. Also you can see some pics of the envelope on 'Trivial facts' page in English.
Our thank you card was sent on 14th with my belated personal b-day gift. Besides me, comments of excitement by 21 people (all Japanese speakers) were quoted on the card of thanks.

<July 24>My goodness, I received a thank you letter with the name of Dan himself on it! (I believe his staff typed it for him though) The original English version and Japanese translation by hirame (receiver/webmistress) are available.

In our birthday wishes collected on this site, there was no phrase like 'Hi, Dan! I'd love to marry you' or 'Contact me, here's my email address' things among them. I encouraged to write NICE b-day celebration, encouragement for his work, their impression of his films etc, not words that shows their personal desire to get in Dan's private life. Such writing was announced to be omitted in the first place.

For more trivial facts regarding Dan's letter (how and when I sent/received mail etc), click here - Trivial facts related to Dan's letter (Dan's fanmail address is added on Aug 3)

<July 4>
Here are pictures of our happy-birthday poster. Pretty blurry though...click to enlarge.
3 big pieces of Japanese traditional paper is connected as the base. I printed out the messages with my computer and then stuck them together. Some stickers of Kabuki (Japanese traditional play) and Ukiyoe (traditional color prints) are on it too, for decoration.
Placements of the messages are in the order of message submission - if you wrote earlier, your message is nearer to the center basically.

On the left is the poster, folded and wrapped. (no enlarged image) I had to fold it softly, but I wrapped it up with a plastic packing sheet and then a sheet of wrapping pager. I enclosed some Spiderman comic stickers, though I wasn't sure a boy of his age appreciate it (LOL). Also enclosed was an explanation letter from me, the organiser/webmistress. All of these went in an envelope.

I'd like to thank my forum friends, Yumin, Akichoro and Lily who went shopping with me and chose the Japanese paper. Also thanks to all those who told me that they wanted to help.

Special Thanks: Last but not least, here I'd like to express my gratitude to Blue-Eyed Obsession, a Dan fan site which had been collecting B-day messages to Dan as early as May. I thought it was a wonderful idea and maybe I could hold a similar event in Japanese. Thank you so much from bottom of my heart!
